The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with others alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
