Whenever a significant honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
