Seven alleged individuals of German far-left group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
