Comeback Medvedev Claims First Title in Nearly 30 Months

19 of the Russian's twenty-one titles have been won on hard surfaces

A resurgent the Russian player claimed his maiden title for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

The athlete, a former number one, has experienced a difficult year, achieving just one win at the Grand Slams and suffering a meltdown at the American major.

His unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serving in especial - led to him exiting of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with former mentor Cervara.

Now training with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently improved in the recent weeks - peaking in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's first championship after the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard surface since spring of 2023.

The win also signifies the Russian has won 21 championships at 21 different competitions.

"For the first time I am participating in a competition with my two daughters at once, so to secure a title is especially meaningful," stated ranked player Medvedev.

"This championship is in dedication of my second daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I won when my child my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, including in that event earlier this year.

Medvedev's defensive approach and frequent emotional displays on court had prompted observers to doubt if his capacity to play at the elite level was over.

Yet the athlete has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and play assertively, supported by an enhanced serve.

The champion recovered from a disadvantage in the initial set against the difficult opponent, securing 4 of the final five exchanges to take the lead.

Both players traded service breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial ATP Tour title, gained dominance to force a third set.

The opponent rescued four initial chances in a competitive third set before the Russian secured a break to that score to serve for the match.

Suitably, Medvedev clinched the title with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet incapable to control a return after a lengthy match.
